Oklahoma: The Land of the Unexpected

Before I begin my anecdote, I must note that the weather today was sunny, bright, and relatively warm (mid-80's). Just keep that in mind.

Anyways... So I'm sitting at my computer, reading blogs, refreshing Facebook, basically ignoring my homework, when all of a sudden I heard this tremendous noise outside. Now, to me, this noise can be one of two things.
  1. Thunder or
  2. Artillery (if I were in Lawton, OK)
But seeing as I'm not in Lawton, OK right now, I assume it's thunder and I look out my window, expecting to see some ominous clouds forming, suggesting there is a storm-a-brewing that will unleash it's mighty power sometime tonight.

Well, guess what. I was wrong.

I look outside and it is POURING DOWN RAIN. I mean seriously, buckets of rain are suddenly falling from this not-so-long-ago-clear sky. It's as if the heavens just opened up and reliquished all of the water it has ever had in its possession.

That was 10 minutes ago.

It is now sunny outside, not a cloud in sight.

Sigh.

On an unrelated, yet just as unexpected note, I am sick. Horribly sick. On the verge of deathly ill. My head feels like it's about to explode. And this wonderful development happened in all of three days.

On Saturday, I woke up with a slight sore throat. I figured it was just dry, so I chugged some fluids and thought nothing more of it. On Sunday, I woke up and and my throat was throbbing and I could not breath because of my outrageously congested nose. After some decongestant, Tylenol, and my fair share of whining, I went to bed and thought nothing more of it.

UNTIL I woke up in the middle of the night with one of the worst earaches I have ever experienced. I literally was on the verge of tears, which was not helped by the fact that I was alone, without any way to deal with the pain short of pulling a Van Gogh, and my mommy was 100 miles away.

So, this morning I called the Health Center, got their last available appointment for the day, and went and saw a doctor. And the verdict is?

I have an ear infection. Which I already knew. But I needed a real doctor to tell me that because I can't just go into a pharmacy and say "Hey, I know I have an ear infection, so can you give me some antibiotics and some benzocaine ear drops?"

And you know how I love a visual, so here are some pictures of my arsenal of meds.

I'm currently taking Augmentin (an antibiotic), Sudafed (a decongestant), Midol (for the sore throat and to help my lymph nodes deflate), and benzocaine ear drops (which help with the pain and the inflammation). I've also been employing my trusty sidekicks nasal spray,
Vicks stick (seriously on of the best inventions EVER), and of course, tissues.

The one kind of cool thing about this expedition was the fact that it was my first time really being an adult. My parents have always dealt with doctors appointments and the like for me. But I successfully booked the appointment, got to the doctor, got my prescriptions filled, and dealt with the insurance all by myself! Needless to say, as crappy as I felt, there was a little bit of pride blossoming underneath it all.

And one more consolation for the day. Dancing with the Stars starts tonight! :)

My first... 2 weeks of being an adult.

Why does everyone make a big deal about the act of turning 18? I mean, what cool things can you do at 18 that you couldn't do at 17? Well I guess you can

  • Buy and legally smoke cigarettes (AKA Kill yourself)

  • Buy lottery tickets ("The lottery is a tax on people who can't do math." --Mr. Bear)

  • Go to the strip club (YES! Finally! I've been waiting ages to do that!)

  • Vote (It's a little late now...) and

  • Join the Military (Me in the Military...LOL!)

And on top of all of that, I suppose I should start keeping track of my own legal documents now because technically, it's like I'm emancipated from my parents. Weird.

But though 18 isn't really all it's cracked up to be (it feels just like 17), it was still a pretty awesome birthday (now that I'm telling you about it 2 weeks later...did I mention I'm a terrible blogger?). It started off pretty crappy as I had to get up at the crack of dawn to get to my 7:30 am Chem Lab, but my early morning grouchiness was softened a little bit when I was locking my door and leaving and saw this delightful little tidbit of sunshine.

The ever so lovely Sarah across the hall had made these great posters for me! They really made the day that much more special.

Later in the day I received a wonderful package from my Aunt Pam (which I will blog more about when I have pictures), and my mom came up to Norman to see me! (we had been apart at this point for like 2 weeks... a long time for us.) We ended up going to P.F. Chang's for dinner, which is a chinese bistro we'd been wanting to try for ages. Our food was great, but our waiter was even better; in our dessert (banana egg rolls with pineapple ice cream... YUM!) he lit a couple pink candles, and I was just so delighted by the utter kindness of a complete stranger! It was the cherry on top of a great day.

So yeah, I'm an adult now. Next stop, gray hair and senior citizen discounts. Lol.

My first... time having sushi.

And boy was it good.

Though technically, it wasn't my first time. The first time I had sushi I had it off a buffet line at a Chinese restaurant in Lawton, Oklahoma. So let me clarify. This is about my first time having good sushi.

But the word "good" doesn't even begin to describe it. It was delicious. Mouthwatering. Indescribable [meaning I should probably stop trying to describe it]. My uncle Jeff had a meeting in Oklahoma City, so as an early birthday celebration, he came to Norman and took me out to dinner. We went to In the Raw, a sushi place on Campus Corner. Like I said, I had never had sushi before, so he kind of took the reins and ordered what he thought would be good.

And I must say, my uncle has excellent judgement :)

We ended up getting the basic tuna sushi, the Cody roll [with deep-fried tempura asparagus], the Keaton roll [with shrimp and cream cheese], and the Deep-fried Goodness [deep-fried soft shell crab...YUMMM]. I pretty much love anything that is fried, so it went over very well with me. And cream cheese and I have a very special relationship, so I was happy he showed up for the party as well :)

But being the stupid newbie blogger I am, I forgot to take pictures! Because trust me, not only was the food amazing, but it was also really pretty! Oh well, the next time I go there [because I do plan on going there again and again], I'll take some.

Now I think there's a place on campus that serves sushi.... :)

My first...day of college.

It's official.

I am a college student.

And I must say, if college is always like today was, then I want to be a college student forever. However, I'm pretty sure my next Chemistry class is not going to last 15 minutes and consist of telling everyone in the class I like free stuff, so professional student may not be the way to go.

But after class today, I'm really excited for the rest of the semester. Though I'm not a huge fan of Chemistry, the T.A. seems really nice and there are tons of tutoring resources for Chem all over campus so I'm not too worried. And Girls and Girlhood in America? For the first class, we watched a Britney Spears video and discussed the psychological and social effects it has on girls ages eight to ten. This is going to so much fun!

The one thing I find really bizarre though is how much extra time I have. I go to class, I finish, I have a couple hours to myself, I go to another class, I finish, I have a few more hours to myself. I've never had so much time! Maybe I need to take up a new hobby. Hat making? Basket weaving? Napkin origami? All suggestions are welcome.
